8 Alpenglow: Yo Mamma’s Big Fat Booty Band
Deeply rooted in funk, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band has a sound that is unique, and has the power and soul to create lasting melodies and seismic rhythms. Together for over a decade, performing well over 150 shows and completing multiple national tours each year, the Booty Band is likened to funk masters from Parliament to Galactic. 10 Tour de Forks: Adventure Hike to the North Pole & Gourmet Cookout
This Tour de Forks event features a hike into the remote and wild North Pole Basin with luncheon lectures by scientists of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory on the flora, fauna, ecosystems and research in the area. Gourmet cookout prepared by the pARTners chefs led by Gloria Kern, West Coast Representative of the Silver Palate. Tour de Forks is the delectable, signature fund-raising series for the Center for the Arts. Dr. Cochran is the Executive Director of the Permanente Federation that represents the national interests of the Permanente Medical Groups, employing more than 16,000 physicians. He has been named “One of the 50 Most Influential Physician Executives in Health Care.” The Affordable Care Act as an approach to health care reform remains a divisive issue of public policy at local, state and national levels. 8 – 15 Adam Freed: “Impressions, In and Around Crested Butte”
The paintings in Adam’s show at the Piper Gallery are created using high viscosity oil paints on stretched canvas. Each painting is researched on site through a combination of drawings, photographs and painting techniques to capture the initial composition. The pieces are finished in the studio using a variety of impressionistic strokes combined with Adam’s own intuitive reaction to the subject matter. Layers of varying brush strokes give each painting texture, depth and movement. The final product is the union of careful observation and Adam’s own individual expression. Through July 8 Kimbre Woods Artist Reception
Kimbre Woods’ photographic work entitled “Nostalgic for Crested Butte” featured in the Piper Gallery focuses on nature, high-lighting Crested Butte, and is a showcase of the surrounding
Gunnison National Forest in photographic printing processes from the 1800’s. The result is ethereal images that take the viewer to a quieter place. The show includes hand tinted photographs, dreamy blue Cyanotypes, rich chocolate brown Argyrotypes, and Tri Color Gum Bichromates, which is a full color photographic process. Through July 27 Stupendous and Small Art
Come and see The Art Studio’s eight week show featuring hand-made small and gift-able items created by local Crested Butte artists. Mary Tuck’s work is a combination of acrylic painted river rocks with portraits of wildlife, and an eclectic collection of PMC and set stone jewelry. Laura Elm’s work is populated by Creatures of Habit, Fairy God Monsters, Glitter Moons and Smiley Cats on pottery, in sculptures, and on handmade collaged cards. Becky Chappell’s work is a series of impressionistic landscapes as well as her more current abstract work. Donna Rozman’s work is a collection of unique wheel thrown and hand built pottery, featuring colorful, hand painted designs. Using a combination of painting, drawing, recycled and natural materials, participants will create playful and temporary artworks in the landscape during this exciting visual arts workshop. We will start with creative writing and drawing exercises to warm up and create a plan. Then we’ll take our visions to the beautiful outdoors and create artworks out of materials that will be placed in the landscape and photographed onsite. Capture the color infusion of Crested Butte’s amazing flowers through drawing with chalk pastels on paper. Local artist, Ivy Walker, will lead the group through exercises and techniques to depict flowers in the garden, then participants will focus on one or two flower drawings. Supplies included. Join Becky Chappell, local professional artist, at the Art Studio of the Center for the Arts for a fun-filled painting session with local wildflowers as the subjects. With her step-by-step instructions, Becky proves that anyone can create a beautiful painting. No painting or drawing experience is required and Becky leads the class with demonstrations on how to mix your paint and how to apply it to the canvas. Create your own Wildflower Journal based on illuminated manu-scripts, which are artworks where the text is supplemented by the addition of decoration, such as initials, borders, miniature illustrations, and wildflowers. We’ll work indoors but you’ll be able to use your new skills outdoors in the future to decorate your personal journey through the high country flora with calligraphy and using brushes, pens and colored pencils. Accompanied by live drummer Shane Whitener, this Tuesday class explores traditional African dance through a variety of movement. African dance is an ancient tradition that brings us back to our roots. Connect with your spirit through the pounding of the live drum while learning from Crested Butte’s own Jenn Robinson. Jenn is passionate about teaching African traditional dance movement in a welcoming environment to beginners and more advanced dancers. Paint Your Own Pottery at The Art Studio
The Art Studio is back open for painting pottery this summer with regular hours June 26 – August 25. Shared Artist’s Space at The Art Studio
The Art Studio has a full ceramics studio, with wheels, kilns, wedging tables, tools, and work storage space. Ceramicists are invited to become a member of the studio, or as we call it, The Shared Artist’s Space (SAS). SAS Membership Includes: access to studio space seven days a week by key code entry; personal stor-age for art supplies, tools, clay, and works in progress; access to potter’s wheels, slab roller, wedging table, and basic ceramics tools and supplies; use of our kiln; access to a community of artists; and the potential to show and sell your work at ASCA (must apply and be accepted).
