Music
10 Willy Porter
Lauded by musicians and music aficionados as a “maverick” and “genius” on the six-string guitar, Willy Porter brings the soul, swing and edge of the blues into a singer-songwriter’s consciousness. His lyrical wordsmithing wields knife-edge precision on his social commentary, straddling the delicate balance of universal messages told through ultimately personal tales. Quickly apparent is his depth, range and jaw dropping dexterity. Each well-rendered tale is driven with spit-fire percussive guitar strumming and fiery color chord picking. His music incorporates the flavors of New Orleans, Chicago and Boston as well as the styles of Paul McCartney, the Band, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dy-lan. The songs on his eight albums sometimes drip with honey, other times they blaze across your consciousness, raw and stripped. A musician’s musician, Willy is also a consummate
performer, witty and captivating, and is back on the Center stage by popular demand. If you had the bad fortune to miss his last show in Crested Butte, don’t repeat the same mistake twice. 8 p.m. $20.
Classes
Through February 11 Introduction to Basic Encaustics
Encaustics is a process of painting with colored wax. It is a medium that can be used in collage or with watercolor, acrylics or oils. Other textures such paper, sand, shells, flowers, leaves, twigs, or cloth as can be introduced. The imagination can go wild! Over the 15 hours in this six week course, learn to work with hot colored waxes in liquefied and stick form, using various types of hot irons, or melting wax blocks to apply with brushes and pallet knives onto encaustic boards. At the end of this course you will have both a finished piece of art to enjoy and have acquired the basic knowledge to continue working in encaustics on your own. To get started in encaustics requires an upwards of $600 in basic supplies, so this class is a great opportunity to learn this exciting medium with a relatively low up-front investment. 7—17 Intro to Aerial Dance
You’ve seen the Dance Collective performing amazing aerial dances over the last couple years and thought to yourself “I bet I could do that!” CBDC is offering the chance to learn how to twirl, fly, climb, and do tricks on the aerial lyra and aerial fabric while increasing core strength and balance. Focusing on foundations for both apparatus as well as injury prevention, this class is suited for “never-evers” and beginners. Instructors: Sasha Chudacoff and Laura De Felice. Classes meet January 7, 9, 14 & 17, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. $75 for full session of four classes or $22 / class.
Fridays Aerial Dance Conditioning
Climbing, flipping upside-down, and holding yourself in challenging positions in the air are all things you will work on in Aerial Conditioning. Participants will build amazing overall body strength in this class by using the lyra and aerial fabric as well as floor exercises including handstand conditioning and stretching. Aerial Conditioning focuses on balancing strength, flexibility, functionality and ease of movement. Open to ages 15 – adult. All levels and “never-evers” are welcome to join in this great way to build strength and confidence for aerial dance class sessions. Fridays Open Aerial Dance
Practice and perfect the skills you’ve learned in class sessions at Open Aerial with access to lyra and silks. This supervised aerial practice time features free time without instruction. This is a time to perfect what you already know, not to learn new things.
Participants must have been enrolled in a full session of CB Dance Collective’s Beginner Aerial classes during the last 12 months or received prior approval from CBDC. 9 Artist Reception – Crested Butte Community School
Crested Butte Community School art students of local artist and teacher, Ben McLoughlin, display their talents in sculpture, draw-ing, painting, mosaics, ceramics, and photography in this “Winter Art Show.” The pieces serve as representative icons of their first semester of class. For these 6 – 12 graders, the Piper Gallery serves as a place to learn how to hang their work, label it, and work within a space as well as be exposed to the elevated experience of an art opening. As a professional gallery space, it allows the stu-dents to see their work in an entirely different way. Come support the young artists of the community. Show runs January 6 – 17. At the Piper Gallery, open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and for ticket holders during shows. Artist Reception: 4—6 p.m. Free
Stupendous and Small
See the latest “Stupendous and Small” Art Show featuring hand-made small and gift-able works of art created by local Crested Butte artists. Mary Tuck’s work is a combination of acrylic painted river rocks with portraits of wildlife and an eclectic collection of set stone and precious metal clay (PMC) jewelry. Laura Elm’s work is populated by Creatures of Habit, Fairy God Monsters, Glitter Moons and Smiley Cats on pottery, in sculptures, and on handmade collaged cards. Suzanne Pierson’s work is a collection of small watercolor and acrylic paintings depicting our local mountain vistas; and Frank Pavkov’s work is a combination of stunning stained glass pieces and beautiful watercolor paintings of outdoor locations throughout the country. Throw a birthday party for adults or children, host a ladies’ night, schedule a bridal or baby shower, and get creative! Shared Artist’s Space
The Art Studio has a full ceramics studio, with wheels, kilns, wedging tables, tools, and work storage space. Ceramicists are invited to become a member of the studio, or as we call it, The Shared Artist’s Space (SAS). SAS Membership Includes: access to studio space seven days a week by key code entry; personal storage for art supplies, tools, clay, and works in progress; access to potter’s wheels, slab roller, wedging table, and basic ceramics tools and supplies; use of our kiln; access to a community of
artists; and the potential to show and sell your work at ASCA (must apply and be accepted). Although SAS is great for potters, artists working in any medium are welcome. Membership is $65 per month. No minimum contract.

25 Head for the Hills
Rooted in the tradition of bluegrass, Head for the Hills is more accurately described as progressive acoustic / modern roots. Their neo-noir style pulls in influences of indie rock, jazz, hip hop, world and folk to stitch together fiery and precise songs of meta-fictional sea shanties, pop-infused newgrass murder ballads and urbane lyricism with both twang and punch. Called “cutting edge” by their 2010 album producer, Drew Emmitt, the multifarious and improvisational music of Head for the Hills is forward-thinking, venturing into a myriad of sonic landscapes packing the house from their debut venue of Mishawaka to festivals such as Telluride Bluegrass and Wakarusa. Featuring Adam Kinghorn (guitar/vocals), Joe Lessard (violin / vocals), Matt Loewen (upright bass / vocals), and Mike Chappell (acoustic and electric mandolin), Head for the Hills has played with notables from David Grisman to Sam Bush and The Flaming Lips to Cake and is actively reshaping the definition of the genre. 8:00 p.m. $15 early bird / $18 week of.

Take your new found love for Aerial Lyra (also known as the
Aerial Ring or Aerial Hoop) to the next level. The focus of this class is learning to maneuver gracefully through dynamic tricks and poses while static or spinning. Students must have taken an entire CBDC Beginner Aerial Dance Class session or receive prior approval. Instructor: Sasha Chudacoff. 27 Ladies Monthly Celebrate & Create Nights
Celebrate and create art together using easy techniques and mediums that you might not have experienced before! Give your-self a blast of creativity in the company of new and old friends. Bring a snack and beverage to share, and come do something deliciously creative and fun. January 27 event features “Marvelous Monotype Printmaking. Learn how to create easy and unique prints on paper from this simple printmaking process. Instructor: Ivy Walker. Classes meet Mondays 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. $15 per evening.

16 The Crash Reel
Following U.S. champion snowboarder Kevin Pearce, this film exposes the irresistible but potentially fatal appeal of extreme sports. An escalating rivalry between Kevin and his nemesis Shaun White in the run-up to the 2010 Olympics leaves Shaun on top of the Olympic podium and Kevin in a coma following a train-ing accident in Park City, Utah. Kevin’s tight-knit Vermont family flies to his side and helps him rebuild his life as a brain injury sur-vivor. But when he insists on returning to the sport he still loves, his family intervenes with Kevin’s doctors cautioning him that even a small blow to the head could kill him. Will Kevin defy them and insist on pursuing his passion? With his now impaired skills, what other options does he have? How much risk is too much? Ullr’s been chained up and under lock-down the last couple of years, and he’s about to be unleashed in the Elk Mountains! Wear your best white Nordic-inspired god and goddess costumes. “Mine Control” will crown a Snow King and Queen who will win a $50 bar tab! Show starts at 10:30pm – $7 – Ages 21 and up only

Directed by Brent Laney, this evening of holiday-related fun will keep you toasty warm with joy as we sing, dance, and sketch a winter wonderland on stage. You’ll experience scenes from plays like A Charlie Brown Christmas and Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas and hear beautiful songs such as “Baby It’s Cold Outside” and “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch.” An SNL skit might even appear. With all your local favorites performing this will be sure to put you in the holiday spirit.

Allan Ivy: “Gypsy Portraits”
Local professional photographer and owner of the Open Your Eyes Gallery in Gunnison, Allan Ivy exhibits a special show of por-traits of the Romany and Gypsy people of the Appleby Horse Fair in Westmoreland, England. Appleby is the largest traditional horse fair of its kind in the world, established by Charter under the reign of James II in 1685. It has been an annual event since that time and is one of the largest remaining gatherings of Romany and Gypsy people. From 2004 to 2007 Allan gained coveted entry to the Ap-pleby camp on four separate occasions, befriending many of the travelers who arrive in traditional horse drawn wagons. The mag-nificent results are intimate and vivid portraits of the Gypsy and Romany people, spectacular depictions of horse washing, and a grand pictorial preservation of one of Britain’s great traditions. 21 Blackalicious
Considered lords of the West Coast Underground, Blackalicious is an American hip hop duo from Sacramento, California made up of rapper Gift of Gab and DJ / producer Chief Xcel). Gift of Gab, known as hip hops premier lyricist, flashes intellectually bent tongue-twisting, multisyllabic, and complex rhymes rife with allu-sion, metaphor and internal rhymes, while Chief Xcel’s classic, funky beats hold down the groove. Blackalicious favors what hip-hoppers call the “positive tip” where lyrics are spiritual and uplift-ing rather than violent or misogynous. Like a lot of experimental alternative rappers, Blackalicious can be quirky and eccentric. Yet, for them, spirituality is a big part of the group’s music. They treat their rhymes not only as a piece of poetry, but as a play with the aesthetics of language in ways that represent the voice as a unique instrument in and of itself. 9 p.m. $15 early bird / $20 week of
30 The Delta Saints
There is something sinisterly devout about the Delta Saints bayou rock – a dirty, grinding roots revival harnessing the brackish delta current into something gripping and bold. Alternating between raucous melodies and slow-burning odes to the devil, Ben Ringel (vocals / dobro), Dylan Fitch (guitar), David Supica (bass), and Ben Azzi (drums) haunt the stage with searing harmonica, howl-ing vocals, swaggering bass lines and a blazing guitar riffs, eerily punctuated with cacophonous New Orleans-inspired choruses.
The Delta Saints are blooming into their musical career not as a pretty flower might, but more like a feral thunderhead. First find-ing their common ground as old-world-loving, good-bourbon-swilling musicians in Nashville, their tours now include festivals such as Wakarusa, juke joints such as the House of Blues, and live shows from L.A. to Sweden, supporting the likes of Robert Randolph and the Family Band. The music beckons, commands, sways and magnetizes you through irreverent briny narratives and a sometimes dark emotional landscape that makes you dance all the harder. 8 p.m. $10 early bird / $15 week of.

From the creators of the award winning skiing film “All.I.Can,” Sherpas Cinema is proud to present their newest ski and snow-boarding film, Into The Mind. With stunning cinematography and groundbreaking storytelling techniques, the Sherpas blur the lines between dream state and reality, immersing you into the mind of a common skier as he attempts to climb and ski the ultimate mountain. Innovative athlete segments are actually a glimpse into his dreamscape, each one harboring messages that help inform our hero’s current, real-life choices. As you experience the majesty of Alaska, Bolivia, the Himalaya and beyond, Into the Mind paints a philosophical portrait of human kind. How do we balance risk versus reward? Why are we inspired to rise to the challenges in our lives and what do we learn on this journey to attain them?

27 Winter Wonderland Photography
Wondering how to take great winter photos? Capture the incredi-ble morning winter light in Crested Butte during this workshop that focuses on using the manual settings of digital cameras. Tak-ing a good photo starts with the mechanics of the camera and con-tinues with composition, depth of field, focus, aperture, light, pat-tern, texture, mood, subject matter and rules of exposure. Learn the basics of the digital camera and photographic principles such as aperture, shutter speed and depth of field as well as the creativ-ity and composition needed to make compelling digital images. 31 Unraveling Visual Art
Join artist and Art Studio instructor Suzanne Pierson for a guided tour through Crested Butte’s “ArtWalk, Art Mediums and the World of the Visual.” Have questions about what you are viewing when walking into an art gallery? Lack the background knowl-edge to answer them? This class is for you! In this unique “art ap-preciation” class and tour, participants have the opportunity to learn about various art techniques, mediums, styles, and ap-proaches in order to gain a better understanding of what they are looking at when viewing art. The first hour and a half is spent at The Art Studio viewing art, answering questions, and learning about the world of the visual. The last hour is a guided tour through ArtWalk, where students have the opportunity to apply their newfound appreciation to what they are viewing on the walls Crested Butte’s fine art galleries. 3:30 – 6 p.m. $15
Celebrate the wonder of the holidays this weekend in Downtown Crested Butte!
The Crested Butte Library will host a Polar Express Celebration for the family. There will be non-stop reading of The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg and continuous viewing of the movie. The Crested Butte Friends of the Library will be hosting a sugar cookie decorating station. Yum! Little ones will be able to write their letters to Santa Claus and the whole family can warm up with a warm cup of hot cocoa! Drop by any time on: Saturday, December 14th from 3 to 5pm
Following the Polar Express, watch the lighting of the big Christmas Tree on Elk Avenue. Festivities start around 5pm. Meet at the Crested Butte Visitor’s Center (corner of 6th Street and Elk Avenue). The UCC Choir will be caroling their way up Elk Avenue to the Christmas Tree in front of Brick Oven (between 2nd & 3rd Street on Elk Avenue). Santa will use his magic dust to light up the Town’s Christmas Tree.
After the lighting, have more fun at the West End Public House to decorate cookies, hot chocolate, and holiday cheer.

1. SKI FREE!
Yes, you can ski free at Crested Butte Mountain Resort on Opening Day. Just stop by the Main Ticket office at the Adventure Center to receive your free lift ticket and enjoy skiing and boarding the early season slopes.
2. FUN!
Enjoy live music and a fun celebration to kick off the new ski season with a “Blizzard of Oz,” theme, complete with a yellow brick road leading to the lift!
3. COSTUME!
Opening Day is a great time to get your silly on and dress in costume. Young and old can break out your craziest attire and welcome winter in Crested Butte’s Land of Oz.

Summer is winding down, but the fun isn’t over yet! Join us at the Center for the Arts Outdoor Stage for the final Alpenglow concert of the summer on Monday, August 12 at 5:30pm. Local bands, The Empty Bottle Blues Band and Opal Moon, will wrap up another fabulous season of free and fun music in the outdoors.
Note: Don’t miss Alpenglow South on Monday August 19 in CB South (located 7 miles south of Downtown Crested Butte)
About the Bands:
Take two strong fistfuls of Freddie King and Muddy Waters. Stir them up with smatterings of the Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers and Eric Clapton. Season with original lyrics and songs whose subject matter swirls around the blues like a swamp around cypress – namely women. Throw in some J.J. Cale for good measure. Finally, take one bottle of bourbon. Empty it. This is the spicy gumbo that is The Empty Bottle Blues Band and they will fire you up like a hot southern night from the slow rockin’ blues to the git down n’ boogie blues. The local spice is Aaron Tomcak on bass, Tommy Rudder on drums, Frank Mesiti on guitar and vocals, Tyler Lucas on guitar, and Chuck McKenrick on keyboards.
There’s still time to join the fun every Tuesday night at the Lobar for “Canvas & Cabernet” ~ a live painting series. Watch and learn how to create your own painting while enjoying complimentary cabernet wine. The event takes place every Tuesday evening through August. About Becky Chappell
Becky has been painting most of her life. Her mediums include oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, scratchboard; she loves it all! Her style is impressionistic and her paintings express her love of color, light and form. She spent 15 years doing scrimshaw (etching on ivory and bone). She has taught many different classes, individuals and groups. Becky loves inspiring others to realize their creativity, and encouraging others to explore with art. Becky has an Associates degree in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Colorado, but is more attracted to fine art than graphic design. She was Vice President of Louisville Art Association for two years and had a mural business called Living Works. For Becky, her art is life-long process of growing, learning and exploring.
