The Crested Butte Arts Festival is right around the corner! Join the fun Aug 2 – 4, 2013 in the heart of Downtown Crested Butte. The main street, Elk Avenue, will be closed to cars as hundreds of artists set up to display and sell their unique works of art ranging from paintings and photographs to ceramics and jewelry and other wearable art.

In addition to the beautiful works of art, enjoy culinary events, live music, Art Alley for the kids, and an art auction. This weekend festival has been a cornerstone of Crested Butte summers for over 40 years!

8 Alpenglow: Yo Mamma’s Big Fat Booty Band
Deeply rooted in funk, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band has a sound that is unique, and has the power and soul to create lasting melodies and seismic rhythms. Internationally recognized as one of America’s foremost quartets, the American String Quartet will be joined by Tom Rosenthal, viola; Alexander Scheirle, cello; and Pat Moulds, double bass. 10 Tour de Forks: Adventure Hike to the North Pole & Gourmet Cookout
This Tour de Forks event features a hike into the remote and wild North Pole Basin with luncheon lectures by scientists of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory on the flora, fauna, ecosystems and research in the area. Gourmet cookout prepared by the pARTners chefs led by Gloria Kern, West Coast Representative of the Silver Palate. Tour de Forks is the delectable, signature fund-raising series for the Center for the Arts. 10 Public Policy Forum: “Health Care Reform,” Jack Cochran, M.D.
Dr. Cochran is the Executive Director of the Permanente Federation that represents the national interests of the Permanente Medical Groups, employing more than 16,000 physicians. He has been named “One of the 50 Most Influential Physician Executives in Health Care.” The Affordable Care Act as an approach to health care reform remains a divisive issue of public policy at local, state and national levels. 8 – 15 Adam Freed: “Impressions, In and Around Crested Butte”
The paintings in Adam’s show at the Piper Gallery are created using high viscosity oil paints on stretched canvas. Each painting is researched on site through a combination of drawings, photographs and painting techniques to capture the initial composition. The pieces are finished in the studio using a variety of impressionistic strokes combined with Adam’s own intuitive reaction to the subject matter. Layers of varying brush strokes give each painting texture, depth and movement. The final product is the union of careful observation and Adam’s own individual expression. Kimbre Woods’ photographic work entitled “Nostalgic for Crested Butte” featured in the Piper Gallery focuses on nature, high-lighting Crested Butte, and is a showcase of the surrounding

Gunnison National Forest in photographic printing processes from the 1800’s. The result is ethereal images that take the viewer to a quieter place. The show includes hand tinted photographs, dreamy blue Cyanotypes, rich chocolate brown Argyrotypes, and Tri Color Gum Bichromates, which is a full color photographic process. Through July 27 Stupendous and Small Art
Come and see The Art Studio’s eight week show featuring hand-made small and gift-able items created by local Crested Butte artists. Mary Tuck’s work is a combination of acrylic painted river rocks with portraits of wildlife, and an eclectic collection of PMC and set stone jewelry. Laura Elm’s work is populated by Creatures of Habit, Fairy God Monsters, Glitter Moons and Smiley Cats on pottery, in sculptures, and on handmade collaged cards. Becky Chappell’s work is a series of impressionistic landscapes as well as her more current abstract work. Donna Rozman’s work is a collection of unique wheel thrown and hand built pottery, featuring colorful, hand painted designs. Using a combination of painting, drawing, recycled and natural materials, participants will create playful and temporary artworks in the landscape during this exciting visual arts workshop. We will start with creative writing and drawing exercises to warm up and create a plan. Then we’ll take our visions to the beautiful outdoors and create artworks out of materials that will be placed in the landscape and photographed onsite. 9 Pastels in the Garden
Capture the color infusion of Crested Butte’s amazing flowers through drawing with chalk pastels on paper. Local artist, Ivy Walker, will lead the group through exercises and techniques to depict flowers in the garden, then participants will focus on one or two flower drawings. Supplies included. 9 Wildflower Canvas and Cabernet
Join Becky Chappell, local professional artist, at the Art Studio of the Center for the Arts for a fun-filled painting session with local wildflowers as the subjects. With her step-by-step instructions, Becky proves that anyone can create a beautiful painting. No painting or drawing experience is required and Becky leads the class with demonstrations on how to mix your paint and how to apply it to the canvas. Create your own Wildflower Journal based on illuminated manu-scripts, which are artworks where the text is supplemented by the addition of decoration, such as initials, borders, miniature illustrations, and wildflowers. We’ll work indoors but you’ll be able to use your new skills outdoors in the future to decorate your personal journey through the high country flora with calligraphy and using brushes, pens and colored pencils. Accompanied by live drummer Shane Whitener, this Tuesday class explores traditional African dance through a variety of movement. African dance is an ancient tradition that brings us back to our roots. Connect with your spirit through the pounding of the live drum while learning from Crested Butte’s own Jenn Robinson. Jenn is passionate about teaching African traditional dance movement in a welcoming environment to beginners and more advanced dancers. Paint Your Own Pottery at The Art Studio
The Art Studio is back open for painting pottery this summer with regular hours June 26 – August 25. Shared Artist’s Space at The Art Studio

The Art Studio has a full ceramics studio, with wheels, kilns, wedging tables, tools, and work storage space. Ceramicists are invited to become a member of the studio, or as we call it, The Shared Artist’s Space (SAS). SAS Membership Includes: access to studio space seven days a week by key code entry; personal stor-age for art supplies, tools, clay, and works in progress; access to potter’s wheels, slab roller, wedging table, and basic ceramics tools and supplies; use of our kiln; access to a community of artists; and the potential to show and sell your work at ASCA (must apply and be accepted). The 17th annual Crested Butte Music Festival (CBMF) promises to be a festival for all the senses, delivering several once-in-a-lifetime chances to enjoy more than 40 world-class performances in intimate venues and a beautiful mountain setting from June 30 – Aug. 11.

“More than 160 musicians from around the world will fill the Gunnison Valley with music for six weeks. Audiences will be transfixed with award-winning artists in every genre including bluegrass, opera, chamber, symphony and jazz,” says Festival Director Alexander Scheirle.

Key Highlights
Marcello Giordani, one of the best-known tenors in the world, will perform on July 29. Giordani began his affiliation with the festival in early 2011 when its Opera Young Artists Program was renamed the Marcello Giordani Young Artists Program, which has grown to more than 400 applicants for 14 coveted spaces. While in Crested Butte, he also will mentor MGYAP participants in a masterclass on July 26.

The Takács Quartet, resident string quartet of Carnegie Hall in New York City and Wigmore Hall in London, will perform at a Home Soirée on Aug. 2. Playing with a unique blend of drama, warmth and humor, the Takács Quartet combines four distinct musical personalities. On Aug. 6, the last Home Soirée of the season features jazz legend Junior Mance and his trio, which includes Hide’ Tanaka on bass and Michi Fuji on violin. Born in Chicago in 1928 and now a resident of Manhattan, Mance is a jazz pianist, composer, author and recording artist of more than 40 albums. Home Soirées are performances for small audiences in beautiful mountain homes and include wine and appetizers.

Introduced in 2005, Have A Beer With Beethoven was an instant success, combining an Oktoberfest-style setting with a Beethoven symphony. This year marks this final installment of Have A Beer With Beethoven with CBMF’s Festival Symphony Orchestra performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 outdoors at the covered Big Mine Ice Rink on July 11.

At CBMF’s annual Celebration fundraiser on July 20, the rink will be transformed into an aerial stage by Eight Count Entertainment. The breathtaking flying acts and mesmerizing feats with aerial hoops of these former Cirque du Soleil athletes will be accompanied by the Festival Symphony Orchestra. Signature cocktails, gourmet dinner service and live and silent auctions are part of this Symphony in Flight evening.

For the past three years, the bluegrass portion of CBMF wraps up with a performance by The Paradise All-Star Band led by newgrass great and festival host Drew Emmitt and comprised of musicians from featured bands. This year, Emmitt will be joined by Sam Bush, Larry Keel & Natural Bridge and many more. See what happens when bluegrass stars jam together in a never-to-be-repeated combination.

Three Mini-Festivals
The schedule of 47 events includes three mini-festivals within the larger festival: Bluegrass In Paradise, Opera In Paradise and Gypsy Jazz In Paradise.

The first free Alpenglow concert of the summer kicks off on Monday, June 24 at5:30pm at the Center for the Arts Outdoor Stage with Urban Island Steel Band based out of Denver, Colorado.

Urban Island Steel Band will make you feel like you’re right there in the Caribbean, with the warm sun and the sand in your toes. You’ll hear some original tunes as well as some unexpected hits. You’ve probably never heard “King of Pain” by the Police played on steel drums, but you’ll love it!

Alpenglow concerts are free and open to the public. They are a very popular event for both locals and visitors, so be sure to join us every Monday night through August 12.

What to Know Before You ‘Glow (a note from the Crested Butte Center for the Arts)

We love Alpenglow! The sun, the mountain, music in the air, family and friends gathering and hanging out, catching up. For some, it’s their favorite social outlet. There are a few rules and regulations we must follow to continue bringing the concert series to you and we ask that you read this and respect the policies.

NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL
The Center for the Arts sells beer, wine and alcohol under a special events license with the Town of Crested Butte. As such, no outdoor alcohol is allowed at the event. Through July 27 Stupendous and Small Art
Come and see The Art Studio’s eight week show featuring hand-made small and gift-able items created by local Crested Butte artists. Mary Tuck’s work is a combination of acrylic painted river rocks with portraits of wildlife, and an eclectic collection of PMC and set stone jewelry. Laura Elm’s work is populated by Creatures of Habit, Fairy God Monsters, Glitter Moons and Smiley Cats on pottery, in sculptures, and on handmade collaged cards. Becky Chappell’s work is a series of impressionistic landscapes as well as her more current abstract work. Donna Rozman’s work is a collection of unique wheel thrown and hand built pottery, featuring colorful, hand painted designs. Accompanied by live drummer Shane Whitener, this class explores traditional African dance through a variety of movement. African dance is an ancient tradition that brings us back to our roots. Connect with your spirit through the pounding of the live drum while you learn movements that have been practiced since the beginning of African civilizations. Learn from Crested Butte’s own Jenn Robinson who is passionate about teaching African traditional dance movement in a welcoming environment to beginners and more advanced dancers. Shared Artist’s Space at The Art Studio
The Art Studio has a full ceramics studio, with wheels, kilns, wedging tables, tools, and work storage space. Ceramicists are invited to become a member of the studio, or as we call it, The Shared Artist’s Space (SAS). SAS Membership Includes: access to studio space seven days a week by key code entry; personal stor-age for art supplies, tools, clay, and works in progress; access to potter’s wheels, slab roller, wedging table, and basic ceramics tools and supplies; use of our kiln; access to a community of artists; and the potential to show and sell your work at ASCA (must apply and be accepted). Just for Kids
20 – 21 Two-Day Advanced Art Camp for 9 – 11 Year Olds: Makeover Your (or someone else’s!) Town Bike. The Art Studio has worked on this project twice in the last five summers, but this time kids will get the chance to work solo on their own design for their own bike (or someone else’s bike!) over a two day period. In addition, kids will work though all the steps including priming the frame; dreaming up the design; creating stencils; laying down the base coat; working with spray paint, air brush, and free hand painting to finish the design; and sealing the finished product. 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. $100 for two days includes supplies. The Sunday Farmers Market in downtown Crested Butte is in full swing! The market is overflowing with freshly baked bread, locally grown bright greens, scrumptious cheeses, and oh so many other delectables. If you are in Crested butte this summer, be sure to add the Farmers Market on your list of places to visit. It’s easy to get to… right downtown on Elk Avenue between 1st and 2nd Streets. The market runs from 10am – 2pm, but get there early to have the best selection of goodies, as some vendors may run out.

Through 20 Aerial Dance Summer Intensive
Join the Crested Butte Dance Collective for the first ever Aerial Dance Summer Intensive. This is a unique opportunity for kids and adults to take high quality classes from the CBDC’s finest aerial instructors. Learn skills aerial equipment such as the lyra and silks. No experience necessary. Classes will culminate in an option to share your new skills with friends and loved ones at the end of the intensive. Classes will be held two times per week for a total of six classes on Mondays and Thursdays.

Through 28 Xanadu Performing Arts Company: Summer Theater Camp
Xanadu Performing Arts Company is designed to inspire and motivate children ages 5 – 18. Campers experience the joy of performing on stage while gaining self-confidence, critical thinking skills, and the importance of teamwork. Campers are introduced to prop building, costume design, music, dance, and acting. Over a three week period, children will audition, rehearse, and perform a live musical for the town of Crested Butte. 13 – 14 Two-Day Advanced Art Camp for 9 – 11 Year Olds: Clay Character Building: Villains and Heroes!
Students will work for two days on a ceramic hand building project where they will get the opportunity to build a character (well known or imaginary) out of clay. Focus will be not only on hand building skills like working with slips, attaching pieces, utilizing tools, and hollowing out sections for firing, but also on working three-dimensionally with shape, proportion, and design to literally “draw” realistically in clay. Pieces will be fired after class concludes, and students may return during The Art Studio’s open painting hours to glaze them. 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. $100 for two days includes supplies.
