June 12 Writer’s Bootcamp
Kickstart your writing with bootcamp! We’ll use short, daily writing exercises to make writing a habit, and each week we’ll study a different theme as we all write two original stories or essays. Mountain Biking is off to a great start. Several trails have opened over the past few weeks. All of the trails are easily accessed from downtown Crested Butte…
Upper Loop / Tony’s Trail / Whetstone Vista:
There are many ways to ride these trails, either as connectors to Brush Creek rides, or as high quality rides in themselves. They are all good in either direction. Tony’s is a smooth intermediate trail, Upper Loop is intermediate with a technical expert section 1/2 mile long, Upper Upper is expert & technical, Whestone Vista is advanced intermediate, more bumpy than technical.
Strand Hill:
Access Strand Hill via Brush Creek Road, approximately 2 miles south of town. This is a fun, short singletrack trail that’s sure to please. It’s one of the first trails to open n the spring and one of the last to close in the fall.
Lupine Trail:
This trail is one of the newest around town, opening during the summer 2011. Ride it from the Saddle Ridge subdivision cul-de-sac off Gothic Road or access it from the County Road off the Slate River road. Just be sure you don’t park your car in the Saddle Ridge subdivision.
Snodgrass:
Always a locals’ favorite. Snodgrass is just a fun trail. You can either ride the Rec Path from town up to Mt. Crested Butte to the Snodgrass Trailhead, or hop the free shuttle bus (bikes taken on first-come, first-served basis) to the ski area and ride the short distance to the trailhead.

29 KISSIDUGU The Kissidugu West African Drum and Dance Ensemble performs traditional Guinea pieces with powerful live drums and exploxive dancing in a high energy performance that is nothing short of inspiring. Leader Fara Tolno has performed with masters Mamady Keita Sekouba Bambino, Youssou N’Dour, Salif Keita Habibe, Koite and Oumou Sangare as well as musicians Burning Spear, Neil Young, Otis Taylor, Joe Cocker and B.B. 1 INTERMEDIATE HOOPDANCE Come and enjoy learning hula-hooping techniques and tricks that will “wow” everyone you know! Students will learn the core and off-body techniques of hooping that will build a solid foundation to use in hoopdancing. The move-ments taught here will strengthen the major muscle groups of the body while challenging the mind. Hula hoops of various sizes and weights are provided for classroom use. 29 MODERN DAY GRAFFITI, BANKSY, STREET ART AND PUBLIC INSTALLATIONS This class for 5th—8th graders will focus on the ever-changing and sometimes controversial world of graffiti and street art. In addition to studying graffiti artists, like Banksy, students will work with design concepts, drawing, stenciling and spray painting to make their own artistic statements. 20 DOUBLETIME The film Doubletime follows two disparate competitive jump roping teams—one suburban white, another inner-city blacks—as they aim to compete in the Holiday Classic at the famous Apollo Theatre in New York. It becomes a charged expose not only on the gymnastics and physical marvels of what these kids accomplish with a simple piece of rope, but an arrestingly frank look at race and cul-ture in America. 17 PRECIOUS METAL CLAY SILVER JEWELRY CREATION Precious metal clay, PMC, is a crafting medium consist-ing of very small particles of metal—in this case, silver. We will shape the clay to our liking and then fire it in the ASCA’s kiln. Once fired, the binder in the PMC burns away—leaving a solid piece of distinctive and beautiful jewelry. The big event takes place Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 5pm on Elk Avenue.
The streets of Elk Avenue will be blocked off to host this unique and truly exciting event. The Big Air competition features skiers and boarders being towed by high-speed snowmobiles from Second Street to Third Street along the heart of Elk Avenue. They hit a kicker that launches them high into the air before hitting the landing zone in front of the Company Store. Judges score the competitors on air and tricks.

Marty Evans graduated from Art Center College of Design in California and became a highly successful advertising photographer, traveling and shooting all over the world from Paris to New Guinea and all points between. Ten years ago Marty retired from that phase of his life and settled in Crested Butte where he developed his unique style of brushstroke photography for fine art. The 2012 Mardi Gras parade down Elk Avenue takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The parade will include an assortment of krewes and floats. Rumor has it they’ll be breaking out the dragon. Come celebrate Fat Tuesday Crested Butte style!
Parade starts at 5:30 pm from the Depot (near the 4-Way Stop in downtown Crested Butte) and marches up Elk Avenue. Break out your favorite beads and colorful mask or just come as you are. Don’t forget to wear warm clothes… Mardi Gras is early this year!
